This poem was originally written in the novel, "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There". I was surprised to read that this nonsensical poem is considered Modern Fantasy. However, since it is about a modern character who is in a world of make-believe the poem fits into this category. One of the distinguishing aspects of this poem are the made up words that Lewis Carroll created. As result, I decided to create a Wordle to feature these words. 

 

Olive's Ocean by: Kevin Henkes

I found a website on "Readwritethink.org" that allows you to make an online postcard. I wrote a postcard as if I were Martha writing to her Grandmother after she came back home for the summer. This program does not allow for a large amount of text so I typed what my original postcard was as well.

In addition, I used two websites to create poems of the novel "Olive's Ocean". I was surprised that Kevin Henkes wrote this novel because I had only read his younger children's books such as "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". This was a beautifully written novel which used an immense amount of descriptive language throughout. I chose words that described the late Olive and the summer that Martha goes through after receiving her letter.  

The Giver by: Lois Lowry

Genre: Science Fiction

I got the idea of using drawings to reflect on scenes from the book from Dr. Wiseman's class. I found the website "art.com" that allows you to draw on a digital canvas. You can use different brush sizes that range from a pencil to a wide paint brush. In addition, you can choose a frame for your masterpiece and hang it in a digital gallery. I chose to draw a scene from "The Giver" that I felt to be the pivotal moment in the novel. Jonas sees his father murder a child and realizes that when people are "released" it actually means they are killed. He also realizes that members of his community are capable of lying, an action that has been forbidden to him since he was a child.
